A tale of two birthdays…Part 1

This is the first in a 2 part series of how birthdays have changed my live.  You will have to read both posts to understand why.  On Friday we celebrated Sam’s birthday.  Even though he looks pained in this picture he was very excited.  He just wanted to go inside and I really needed a picture of him first.

I had no idea Sam had been born 14 years ago.  Our family was living in Maryland and preparing to move to Florida.  We didn’t know about Sam until June of 1997 when we got a call from an agency asking us if we would be interested in adopting Sam!

A little pre-party soccer with Sam’s friend Michaela.

Much thought and prayer time went into the decision to adopt Sam.  We were 49 and 55 and already had 5 children.

Let the party begin!

There were actually 3 families that wanted to adopt Sammy boy and we were chosen.  I didn’t have to fly around the world to pick him up…only to Pennsylvania.Jake’s class made birthday cards for Sam that Jake read them all to his brother.

Jim, Jack and annoying party horns.

Each of our 6 children has caused us to grow as a parent.  Each has a unique personality.  Parenting at 62 and 68 is so much different then when we started out at 30 and almost 36.  Each child brings us new friends that we never would have known except through that child.  Each child makes us better and stronger and more capable as we learn how to parent that child.  Something that works for one will not necessarily work for another.Ready…Set…Stop teasing your brother Jake!Blow…

Fourteen years of parties and learning about our guy Sam.  Working and learning and growing together as a family.  Daily building up our family bond and loving each other through it all.

The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing
